Artist Statement:
This is what I believe........
Passionate and bold are the words I use to describe my work. This energy drives my emotions and puts zip in my steps. When there's a painting on the easel, that's my first stop after grabbing a cup of coffee. I either adore what I see or know what's next. Maybe there's a little to add or enough to keep me busy for hours. The painting is coming alive.
My genre is abstract expressionist which gives me creative options. For me that means creating a painting that is full of life, motion, drama, and surprise. Vivid strong colors are vital. As are layers of pigment. Surprise is always necessary. I've often said "sometimes I feel like I'm channeling Picasso."
I've been honored to teach seasoned artists and also those who have dreamed of painting. My curriculum focus begins with (1) never make a plan, it can disappoint; (2) let the work evolve before your eyes, being surprised and pleased as it happens; and (3) experience will teach you when a piece is finished.
If it's a bad day or pouring rain outside my studio, easel and paints cure any dark mood. The smell of oil paint on my palette, brushes, hands (and clothing, I'm messy) brings a smile as I start my day.
There are days when the work just doesn't work! But that's when I know it's time to walk away and return with fresh eyes.
Welcome to my studio. Expect surprises!
